After the peaceful and even optimistic marches organized by students in Paris, protests against the CPE turned into riots between police and protestors which were sometimes extremely violent. A mix of extreme-leftist militants, suburban youths and students dreaming of a new "May 68" used these protests to fight anti-riot police, vandalize cars and shops, and beat protestors and bystanders.
